Airport Transportation
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is located approximately 15 miles south of San Francisco. SFO services more than 53 airlines from around the world. Airport information can be found at the

Traveling between terminals is easy thanks to AirTrain, a fully automated people mover that runs 24 hours a day. AirTrain’s Red Line connects all terminals and terminal garages and provides direct access to the BART station. AirTrain’s Blue Line connects all terminals and terminal garages and provides direct access to the BART station and the Rental Car Center.
- BART rapid rail connects SFO to San Mateo County, San Francisco and the East Bay.
- Caltrain commuter rail also serves SFO (take BART to Millbrae and transfer).
- SamTrans bus routes link SFO to San Mateo County, San Francisco and Palo Alto.
Other transportation options for SFO include airporter buses, pre-arranged vans, shared-ride vans, taxis and limousines.
Alternate airports in the San Francisco Bay Area are Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC). Oakland is approximately 19 miles from downtown San Francisco and San Jose is approximately 51 miles away.

Air Travel Advisory
Starting January 2018, passengers who have driver's licenses issued by a state that is not yet compliant with REAL ID and that has not received an extension will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel. Please see
TSA's website for a list of acceptable forms of identification. Passengers who have licenses issued by a state that is compliant or that has an extension to become compliant with REAL ID requirements may continue to use their licenses as usual. DHS's REAL ID website. DHS continually updates this list as more states come into compliance or obtain extensions.
About REAL ID: Passed by Congress in 2005, the REAL ID Act established minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits federal agencies, like TSA, from accepting licenses and identification cards for official purposes from states that do not meet these standards.
