Getting Unstuck from Negative Thinking
Alison Ledgerwood Watch video
1:30-3 p.m.
COURSE CODE: 6161, CE HOURS: 1.5
Why do negative events seem to stick in our heads so much longer than positive ones? And is there anything we can do about it? Behavioral science research suggests that the human mind may be wired to look for negative information and to hold onto it. This tendency for our minds to tilt toward the negative has important consequences for understanding how people react in the face of stress and negative events. The good news is that we can also retrain our brains – if we put some effort into it – so that we start to weigh the good and the bad a little more evenhandedly. Join Dr. Alison Ledgerwood, professor and Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of California, Davis and popular TEDx speaker, to harness a better understanding of how you think and improve your life.
Learning Objectives
- Explore why your mind holds on to negativity
- Start the process of retraining your brain to be more positive
- Employ a more evenhanded approach to weighing positive and negative
Negative Thinking Workshop: Tools for Getting Unstuck

The Cure for Stress
Heidi Hanna Watch video
12:30-2 p.m.
COURSE CODE: 7161, CE HOURS: 1.5
Stress is quickly becoming the leading cause of disability and disease, contributing to 75-90% of medical visits and costing the U.S. business economy an estimated $600 billion annually. Despite escalating costs to individuals and organizations, many stress management protocols are outdated and may be causing more harm than good. Based on the recent neuroscience of stress, a paradigm shift is required where we no longer try to minimize or manage stress but rather mobilize the insight and energy it provides to master it; using stress as fuel for positive change, creating resilience and social support that extends beyond the workplace.
Join integrative neuroscientist Dr. Heidi Hanna to discuss how to use the energy of stress to fuel positive change and build sustainable health, happiness, and resilience.
Learning Objectives
- Redefine stress using a new framework built upon recent neuroscience research
- Explore the different types of stress and stress reactions
- Identify evidence-based techniques to train whole-brain skill sets that transform stress
- Recharge technique designed to build resilience
